Unread Index Rankings

Every story we publish carries an Unread Index: a significance score out of 10 and a count of the other coverage we found. This page ranks them side by side. By default the stories at the top are the ones with the widest gap between how much they matter and how much attention they have received.

Reading the labels. Two kinds of label appear here. The first three are verdicts, given only when a story's significance outruns its coverage. The last three simply describe how much coverage we found, whatever the score.

  • Unread Significance 7 or more, and 2 or fewer outlets.
  • Underread Significance 7 or more, and 3 to 6 outlets.
  • Under the radar Significance 4 or more, and 2 or fewer outlets.
  • Low profile, Covered, Widely covered No verdict: 0 to 2, 3 to 6, or 7 or more outlets. A high score with “Widely covered” means the story matters and is already getting attention.

Significance is scored out of 10. Outlets are the other news, trade and journal sources we found covering the same development. Press releases and other sources, such as reference sites, blogs, social posts and stock-news reprints, are not counted. Historical stories count coverage from the past five years; current stories count coverage since the development was announced. How the Unread Index works.
